Twenty-five subjects aged 18 to 35 years participated in a single, 30-minute session of balance board and mental task performance. One group consisted of eight healthy subjects and the other group consisted of seven obese subjects. Two test conditions were used, 1) the balance board alone and 2) the balance board with additional mental tasking. The mental tasks involved performing a temporal comparison task while standing on the balance board for 10 seconds. The balance board consisted of a force plate under the feet and infrared video-tracking system to record the movement of the center of pressure (COP). Prior to testing, the subjects were familiarized with the balance board to be used for balance assessment. Results indicated that the obese subjects had higher body mass indexes (BMIs) (p Recycling in China Abstract This report documents the contributions of waste management activities in China in terms of waste generation, waste treatment, waste management technologies, and public awareness. Data for these indicators is provided for the years 1991 to 2001, and statistical information is included for the year 2000. The main findings of the report include: by year, waste generation has declined, especially for recyclables; the number of waste-to-energy plants has increased; the use of various equipment and technology for recycling has expanded; and public awareness of waste management issues is growing. Waste generation in China has declined in each of the past few years. The declines have been caused by both improved recycling of waste and the increased use of more efficient technologies, although the latter has had a much greater impact on the decline in waste generation. Waste treatment (secondary processing) in China increased significantly between 2000 and 2001. The growth in waste treatment capacity reflects the recent increase in the demand for treatment, particularly in the second- and third-tier cities ac619d1d87
